How to Get Your Child Started in Golf

Quick answer: Start with one low-pressure try before you buy or book anything — a bucket of balls at the range, or a few holes together at a quiet time. If they want to go back, follow the six steps below in order. Each one only needs the last to have gone well.

Six Steps, In Order

1
Try it once, with nothing bought

Most ranges and clubs will rent basic clubs or let you borrow a set for a first go. Keep it to 20–30 minutes.

2
Watch their reaction, not their swing

Did they want to hit more balls? Ask when you can go again? That’s the only signal that matters at this stage.

3
Borrow or rent before you buy

Hold off on a starter set until you’ve had two or three sessions — many clubs and some family/friends will have junior clubs to borrow.

4
Book one taster lesson

A single session with a coach for grip and safety basics is enough at this point — not a full course.

5
Find a junior-friendly format

Look for a short loop (3–6 holes), a family scramble, or a junior clinic — not an 18-hole round.

6
Only then decide on lessons or a programme

Once you’ve seen genuine, repeated interest, that’s the point to invest in correctly sized equipment and a more regular format.

Frequently Asked Questions

What if my child doesn’t want to go back after the first try?

Completely fine — leave it and try again in a few months. One flat first session doesn’t mean golf isn’t for them, it might just mean the timing wasn’t right.

Do I need to know how to play myself?

No. Range staff and taster lessons handle the teaching — your job at this stage is just showing up and following their lead.

How long does step 1 through 6 usually take?

There’s no set timeline. Some families move through all six steps in a month; others take a full season. Let their interest set the pace, not a schedule.

Every step counts, from the very first try.
